CMT 11 Photography Terms Assignment
1. Aperture- A space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, esp. the variable opening by which light enters a camera.
2. Dept of field- The distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that give an image judged to be in focus in a camera.
3. Darkroom- A room from which normal light is excluded, used for developing photographs.
4. Developer- A person or organization that develops something.
5. Enlargement- A photograph that is larger than the negative from which it is produced or than a print that has already been made from it.
6. F-stop- The f-stop is the focal length of the lens divided by the diameter of its opening.
7. Fixer- A substance used for fixing a photographic image
8. ISO- used to indicate the light sensitivity of the film's emulsion
9. Panning- Swing (a video or movie camera) in a horizontal or vertical plane, typically to give a panoramic effect or follow a subject.
10. Single-lens reflex camera (SLR)- A single-lens reflex (SLR) camera is a camera that typically uses a semi-automatic moving mirror system that permits the photographer.
11. Stop bath - An acid solution used to check the developing process of a photographic negative or print.
12. Telephoto lens- a camera lens that magnifies the image
13. View camera- A camera equipped with a lens mount and film holder that can be raised or set at an angle.
14. Viewfinder camera- The viewfinder is the single most important user interface on any camera.
15. Zoom lens- A lens allowing a camera to change smoothly from a long shot to a close-up or vice versa by varying the focal length.
16. Continuous tone photography- Image in which colors and shades of gray smoothly merge into the neighboring colors.
17. Lens- The light-gathering device of a camera.
18. Telephoto lens- a camera lens that magnifies the image
19. Wide-angle lens- A wide angle lens can be a powerful tool for exaggerating depth and relative size in a photo.
20. Shutter- a shutter is a device that allows light to pass for a determined period of time.

1. Briefly explain what a digital camera is.
- A camera that stores the pictures or video it takes in electronic format instead of to film. There are several features that make digital cameras a popular choice when compared to film cameras.2. Name and describe 5 common features found in the latest digital cameras on the market.
- Compression - this process shrinks the file size of a photo
- Power Source - digital cameras are voracious eaters of batteries
- Lens - lens length will determine how much of a scene will fit into a picture
- Self-Timer- this is an option that lets the photographer be included in the photo
- LCD Screen - this screen will let you see what the photo will look like and let you see what you've already taken and erase what you don't need3. Insert a picture of three different digital cameras- try to show different angles!
4. What is a megapixel?
- The term megapixel means one million pixels. A digital camera whose image sensor captures a photograph with 10 million pixels.
